Sea temperatures drop to around 65°F in October. Swimming in the sea can get pretty chilly as the month goes on, but it’s generally still comfortable at the beginning of the month.
What Should You Wear In San Diego In October?
San Diego is not a city where you can expect typical fall attire in October. You won’t see locals wrapped up in warm coats and scarves.
October is a transition month for San Diegans, where you can find people gradually swapping their shorts for jeans.

Halloween
Of course, the most exciting event of fall is Halloween. And trust us, nowhere does it better than San Diego. The city hosts a vast selection of spooky-themed happenings for all ages.
Here are some of the top events for the little ones and yourself to enjoy:
- SeaWorld San Diego Halloween Spooktacular: Entrance to this SeaWorld event is included in standard tickets and takes place on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month. Let the kids put on their costumes and join in on the fun.
- Balboa Park Halloween Family Day Out: A fun, family-friendly day out, kids under 12 can enter selected museums for free and enjoy live entertainment. This year’s dates are TBD.
- Trick-or-Treat on India Street: Head over to Little Italy, where you’ll find India Street filled with monsters, ghosts, and witches trick-or-treating at participating local businesses. Come along on October 27th from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.
Who said Halloween is just for kids? Below are some festivities for the adults to take part in.
- SeaWorld Howl-O-Scream: This is SeaWorld’s Halloween outing for the older crowd, where guests can brave the terrifying houses of horror before hitting the dance floor. The event runs every weekend during October.
- San Diego Zombie Crawl: A spooky take on a pub crawl, dress up in your finest Halloween costumes, and spend an evening bar-hopping and enjoying free shots and entry to participating bars. The Zombie Crawl runs from 6 pm, 2023 dates TBD.

Haunted Houses

- Scream Zone Del Mar: Certainly not for the faint-hearted, Del Mar Fairgrounds hosts three haunted house attractions every October, which many locals agree are the city’s scariest. The haunted houses are open throughout October.
- The Disturbance: The name says it all, this new haunted house is set to be a chilling experience. Like Scream Zone, three spooky attractions are included with each ticket, and the event is expected to occur throughout October in Mission Valley. (Not open in 2023 but will come back in 2024)
- Universal Studios Halloween: Due to take place every Thursday to Sunday from mid-September, the horror nights at Universal Studios are strictly for those aged 13 and above.

Oktoberfest is another popular fall activity in San Diego. Germany’s famous, beer-centric event has been happily adopted across the United States, and San Diego is no different.

The Day of the Dead is traditionally celebrated on November 1st or 2nd. This festival takes place over a weekend, honoring the dead by constructing countless altars, also called ofrendas or offerings, throughout Old Town to welcome the dead.
