This project aims to provide a long-term solution for the 56-year-old pier through a potential replacement. There are a variety of goals which are at the forefront of design ideas that are very important to the community and to those who enjoy the use of the pier.
One of these goals is to honor the pier's history and also look into the future. The OB Pier has been an important part of the community’s identity for 56 years and the beach itself has a history going back to the Kumeyay. This history should be honored, while creating new ways to expand the pier’s impact and activation for the next 100 years.
While designed to serve all San Diegans and those who visit here, a new Ocean Beach Pier should reflect the unique values and priorities of the community where it is located.
The pier should be a model for sustainability while minimizing environmental impacts and being resilient to future climate and sea level changes. It is important to consider ways the pier might provide opportunities for environmental education and be net-energy positive or neutral.
The new pier should continue to prioritize safe and equitable access to the ocean experience for all. It should be a welcoming place for all to enjoy the pier safely.
Lastly, the new pier should enhance and expand its current uses while introducing a diverse offering of new experiences to ensure that it is active, vibrant, and means more to people. The future pier should provide the most benefit and length of service to the community for years to come.
